Chapter 3

Easton

Once we arrive at Lincoln’s, I’m a ball of nerves.

And fucking pissed.

I knew The Society wasn’t done with us, but I honestly thought they would give us a little more time before slithering back into our lives with their next fucked-up assignment. Whoever is behind the sinister, secret society must be running on a tight schedule. Strike while the iron’s hot, right? Why delay gratification, when it’s so easy for them to obtain it now? They’ve got us by the junk, and they know it. I just haven’t figured out how they know.

“Where is it?” I bark out the instant I step into the large foyer.

“My room,” Lincoln replies, sounding finite.

I grab the banister and head upstairs with Stone and Lincoln following right behind me. Finn and Colt, however, are nowhere in sight.

“Where are they going?”

“Colt just needed to make a call, and Finn is grabbing me a water bottle from the kitchen. Relax, East,” Stone explains, her calming tone intent on placating my nerves.

Fuck.

I must be really losing my shit if Stone Bennett, of all people, is being sweet with me. It’s just the wake-up call I need to tone my apprehension down a notch. Sooner or later, all of us are going to be in The Society’s line of fire. Would it be any easier for me to handle if they had gone after Colt or Lincoln next, instead of me? No, it wouldn’t. At least now that it’s my turn to play their sick game, I have control over how I go about it. If they think they can pull my strings without a fight, they have another thing coming.

“I wonder why they delivered the letter here and not to your house, East,” Stone muses, taking a seat on the edge of Lincoln’s bed once we enter his room.

I know the answer to that.

“The Society wouldn’t risk it. On top of the heavily armed security at my place, Dick has cameras all over the house. Anyone seen coming in or out would be recorded. The man is all about safety.”

I leave out the fact that my home is a goddamned fortress because Dick wants my mother to feel safe at all times. She doesn’t take a step off the property without two bodyguards shadowing her every move, either. Dick and I may not agree on a lot of things, but when it comes to my mother’s safety, we’re both on the same page. Of course, rumor has it that my stepfather just put up these over-the-top security measures to ensure no one kidnaps his wife to extort millions out of him. For most folks, it’s just good business sense and has nothing to do with actual concern for their spouse’s well-being.

“Huh. Why doesn’t this house have a security system in place? I mean, it was the governor’s home, after all, not to mention your mother’s,” Stone adds curiously, looking over at Lincoln.

If Stone expected an answer from Lincoln, she doesn’t get one. I, on the other hand, know why his father never put a security system in his house.
